Maker in Residence Logo

The ANU MakerSpace’s Maker in Residence program aims to support visiting makers from all disciplines and backgrounds who do not have access to the space as an ANU staff member or student.

Residents will receive access to the tools and expertise across all our locations on the ANU Acton Campus. A standard residency will be 3 months long, allowing enough time for a resident to be inducted and trained on the tools we offer and use them to work on their proposed project. For details about the tools on offer, browse our website.

Application Process

Applicants for the Maker in Residence program are required to submit a formal application based around an idea. Projects of all kinds are welcome, including opened-ended design problems, material experiments, conceptual concerns or just something you want to make. The project should loosely outline what you want to do with your time in the MakerSpace, whether you plan to make something specific or experiment.

No experience with digital fabrication technology is necessary. By inviting visiting makers into our space, we aim to amplify and support our maker culture of skill sharing, inclusivity, and diversity for the benefit of the existing MakerSpace members. Throughout their time with us, we ask that Makers in Residence share their skills to the community. What a Maker in Resident shares does not have to be attached to the proposed project and can be based on existing knowledge and is discussed throughout the residency.

By inviting Residents into our space, we aim to amplify and support our maker culture of skill sharing, inclusivity, and diversity for the benefit of the existing MakerSpace members. So we’re asking Makers in Residence to suggest how they can share their skills to the community at the close of their residency. For example, residents could run a small workshop (or similar event), create an open-access instructable, or build something for the MakerSpace. What a Maker in Resident shares does not have to be attached to the proposed project and can be based on existing knowledge.

Applications are open year round! Please contact makerspace@anu.edu.au if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • If your application is accepted, we’re inviting you here to do what you do - with us. Residencies are commonly used in the creative arts, where they are an invitation for an individual or collective to temporarily join a new environment or group to experiment with incorporating that experience into their creative practice. For people not familiar with that concept, you may like to think of the opportunity as providing you the access that something like a visiting fellow or scholar, or a self-directed internship might provide.

  • To become a Maker in Residence you must not have existing access to the MakerSpace. If you have an active University ID at the ANU, you can come and join us as a regular member.

You must also: be over 18 years of age, have the right to work in Australia, and not be using the residency to support a commercial activity (see Terms and Conditions in the Application Guide).
